success story

I discharged a client yesterday – a lovely young woman who has worked hard this year to overcome bulimia. She is now six months free from bingeing and purging, and wears a beautiful celebration ring to remind her of her achievement and to keep her walking the path of recovery.

How did she do it? Her reply to that question went something like this: “First you get one day, then two, then three in a row, then a week. When you have a slip, you start again. Eventually you get two weeks, three weeks, then a month, and then you just don’t want to break your record. I don’t want to go back there, to feel like that again…I’m happy with who I am.”

My client is learning to live her life without bulimia – to feel her feelings as they arise and not use food to help manage her emotions and stress. She hasn’t gained any weight at all since giving up her eating disorder; she trusts her body to let her know when she needs food and when she’s had enough.  This isn’t an easy lesson to learn for so many individuals who struggle with food issues, but a key component to recovery.

One day at a time. Learn from your mistakes. Keep moving forward. Trust yourself. You can do it too.

I am sending sincere, heartfelt congratulations to everyone who has beaten an eating disorder, and a message of hope to everyone who is working toward making peace with food.

Love,

Ellen
